Compounding a problem created by the state of resources (or lack thereof) around the world, the people affected most are the poorest and most vulnerable. These people constitute around 1/7 of the world’s population, also known as the “Bottom Billion”. The most urgent challenges that they face relate strongly to the WEF-Nexus, specifically a lack of access to safe drinking water, lack of nutrition, and poor access to energy or a reliably electricity grid. It is in this spirit that EXPO Milan, 2015 opened on the 25th of June, 2015 to address these issues. The event was organized by Politecnico di Milano, the grant holder of the TriNex Consortium, and stressed the importance of finding an integrated planning approach towards solving these urgent issues.
